Take a Veteran to School Day
December 20, 2008
As a Korean War veteran and the State President of the Korean War Veterans Association in West Virginia, I was honored to have recently participated in Senator Jay Rockefeller’s West Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association (WVCTA)sponsored Take a Veteran to School Day. The events I attended were held at South Charleston High School and Chapmanville Regional High School, two of 12 programs that took place in West Virginia around Veterans Day 2008, and supported by local cable operators Suddenlink Communications, Comcast and Time Warner Cable.
This program helped the teachers and students of South Charleston and Chapmanville hear my memories – my history. Along with the stories that I told, other veterans from WWII to Iraqi Freedom spoke candidly about their military service. Like me, these fellow veterans do not consider themselves heroes, but our stories need to be shared as a gentle reminder that “Freedom is not free.”
I thank the WVCTA for their support of this program. Like my wartime memories, this was truly an experience I will never forget.
Sincerely,
Frank Goff
